So… A LOT has changed since my last post, but one thing that’s stayed the same is the running idea that many of us feel like we aren’t good enough. I’ve come across this narrative in so many areas: social media, friends & family, fellow bloggers and entrepreneurs alike. Unfortunately, this is most common among women… We often don’t feel like we’re “good enough” for whatever reason.
Perhaps we feel this way because we wear so many hats. (And no, I’m not talking fashionable hats… Not yet, at least.) Women are taught to juggle-it-all because we can “have-it-all”. Trying to do this can leave us feeling overwhelmed; believing that taking the time to focus on the highest priority “hat” (at that moment) is actually a negative thing… Rather than realizing that we don’t have to get everything done at once. (Raise your hand if you’ve been there!✋)
One way to overcome overwhelm
To further my personal growth journey, one of the things I’ve been doing is listening to more podcasts. A current favorite is Oprah’s Super Soul Conversations (of course!). One conversation that’s resonated most with me (so far) was between her and Joel Osteen. They talked about the power of I am (from his book, aptly titled, The Power of I Am). I found it quite interesting how much your mindset can shift when you change what you say after the words: I am…
Usually, when we say “I am…” it’s followed by something negative, like:
- I am… so tired.
- I am… a failure.
- I am… sick of this ‘ish.
- I am… not able to finish.
- I am… fed up with…
But what if you change that negative to something more positive? Meaning, what if you say what you WANT to happen rather than how you feel at that moment? How might that improve your perspective, energy levels, or even your will to persevere?
Let’s try it!
Instead of saying:
- “I am… so tired” — let’s try — “I am… looking forward to my next burst of energy.”
- “I am… sick of…” — let’s try — “I am grateful for…”
- “I am… a weakling” — let’s try — “I am… getting stronger every day”
- “I am… a failure” — let’s try — “I am… finding new ways to improve and grow.”
Remember Who You Are
You. Are. Worthy, and, what you do matters! I know, sometimes you may sit there thinking “Why do I even do (insert current frustration)?!” It all matters in the long run. So, if you’re feeling down for any reason, as though the number of hats you wear equates your self-worth (they don’t by the way), just remember The Power of I AM:
I am… a caregiver/doctor/nurse/aide.
I am… a mother (to furbabies!).
I am… a chef.
I am… a housekeeper.
I am… a blogger.
I am… a planner.
I am… a friend.
I am… a daughter.
I am… a coach.
I am… a comedian (ha!).
I am… a fashionista.
I am… a decorator.
I am… an adventure seeker.
I am… a time management expert.
I am… Me.
So tell me…
I hope this post both inspires and motivates you in some way today! What’s your I AM story…? I’d love to know in the comments below.
As always, Stay Classy!
